mergansers in the morning

Moments like this remind us of why we are here.

When we collect water from the river to wash our dishes and hair because the ground is still frozen and we can’t install a new pump so that we can get running water from our well, which also means buying potable water from Pepsi or Coke to drink from bottles that are polluting the earth, a flock of red-breasted Mergansers float down the river while we watch, waiting for the ground to thaw and we know that in spite of our troubles, everything is good again.
